The idea to create KAMI comes from a specific lifestyle, which conducted the creators of the project to frequently visit Asia. Journeys which left a sign: the desire to bring back to Rome a small part of those magnificent lands. This dream was realized with KAMI, “gateway of Asia”. A place in which only through the manipulation of the body can the “third way” be found. The western world knows only two ways to explore the human body: the first through one’s mother, and the second, more mature with one’s partner. The “third way” signifies orient, and encloses a long and inestimable cultural journey: Buddhism and Hinduism blend with other ancient religious traditions. The treatment of the body to reach the psyche.

Five long years of gestation. A project that always had ethic business at the first place, for the person is our primary resource. A team which worked with great effort and great force of will to leap over all the burocratic obstacles. The courage of a creative entrepreneurship in Italy, a valuable commercial country, to create a project which originates from different cultures. To innovate the wellness market and transmit a new message is our objective: the body is not simply a mere container of the “physical shape”, but also live matter that when in harmony with the emotional universe, makes each one of us a unique and irreplaceable being.

Description of the place and the architect

The objective was to create in the ancient city, Rome, a place which could express Asia. Pure Design by Chantaka Purananda and Pisanu, the protagonists of the reconstruction of the well famous Mandarin Oriental in Bangkok, are amongst the creators of an interiors which are transforming the skyscrapers of the city. They redesigned spaces of a historical roman building. Wood, stone and water are the elements which characterise the different interiors. Ten rooms with single treatments and five suites. Many are the materials come from Asia: from the front door, carved according to the most traditional Thai Lanna style, to the teak wood with which were created the floor, furniture and decorations. Marble is used for the onsen and the bathrooms.

Description of the decorations 

The simplicity is the true style which characterises KAMI SPA. Two walls which permit water to flow beneath the grey granite pavement welcome the guest. A clear oong, the most traditional container  with which the chaow-na used to gather rain water, is found on the second floor. The element of water is found also in other rooms to give a feeling of living and dynamic place. The sculptures that discretely emerge from the dim lights are stone copies of the khmer art. The choice to not purchase original decorations comes from the urge to protect an artistic patrimony which is frequently subtracted to Asia in order to decorate western homes. The only original, yet contemporary decorations are the wooden boards which show scenes taken from Ramayana and Mhabharata of the Balinese sculptor Made Jojol, or the traditional panels called batak from Sumatra.

Description of the Products

All products for the body are conceived and developed by KAMI SPA. For aromatherapy (essential oils with a maximum purity are mixed with natural bases : mandorla, olive, rose, etc) all have been tested by the Università di Bologna. For the facials KAMI chose Elemis, global leader in cosmetic therapies.

Description of the menu

 KAMI’s menu is inspired to the geo-cultural areas which mostly represent Asia. All therapies adhere to shiatsu techniques (Japan), ming (Cina), nuad-thai (Thailand), jamu (Indonesia)and ayurveda (India). At the base of these massages is the primary conception of the traditional Chinese medicine: body and soul are never separate, but depend one from the other. The objective of each therapy is to restablish the equilibrium between these two parts. The manipulations are gentle, yet deep, in order to alleviate any muscular tensions, or stresses due to incorrect postures. One can energize or relax her/his body. The shiatsu is the classic Masunaga. The Chinese therapies include baguanfa or tuina. The nuad-thai is the innovative revision of the traditional thai massage so that one can have a deep stretching of the body. The Balinese jamu encloses Chinese and Indian techniques. The ayurveda “science of life” is India’s way to find one’s natural state through different dosha.
